Update formulas for split-plot and block designs

چکیده
For the algorithmic construction of optimal experimental designs, it is important to be able to evaluate small modifications of given designs in terms of the optimality criteria at a low computational cost. This can be achieved by using powerful update formulas for the optimality criteria during the design construction. The derivation of such update formulas for evaluating the impact of changes to the levels of easy-to-change factors and hard-tochange factors in split-plot designs aswell as the impact of a swap of points between blocks or whole plots in block designs or split-plot designs is described. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. Optimal Two-Level Regular Fractional Factorial Block and Split-Plot Designs
SUMMARY We propose a general and unified approach to the selection of regular fractional factorial designs which can be applied to experiments that are unblocked, blocked, with random or fixed block effects, or have a split-plot structure. Our criterion is derived as a good surrogate for the model-robustness criterion of information capacity. In the case of random block effects, it takes the ra...
متن کاملRepeated Measures in Randomized Block and Split Plot Experiments
Randomized block and split plot designs are among the most commonly used experimental designs in forest research. Measurements for plots in a block (or subplots in a whole plot) are correlated with each other, and these correlations must be taken into account when analyzing repeated measures data from blocked designs. The analysis is similar to repeated measures analysis for a completely random...
متن کاملWhole-Plot Exchange Algorithms for Constructing D-Optimal Multistratum Designs
Multistratum experiments contain several different sizes of experimental units. Examples include split-plot, strip-plot designs, and randomized block designs. We propose a strategy for constructing a D-optimal multistratum design by improving a randomly generated design through a sequence of whole-plot exchanges. This approach preserves the design structure and simplifies updates to the informa...

While split-plot designs have received considerable attention in the literature over the past decade, there seems to be a general lack of intuitive understanding of the error structure of these designs and the resulting statistical analysis. Typically, students learn the proper error terms for testing factors of a split-plot design via expected mean squares. This does not provide any true insig...
متن کاملSplit-plot Designs with Mirror Image Pairs as Sub-plots
In this article we investigate two-level split-plot designs where the sub-plots consist of only two mirror image trials. Assuming third and higher order interactions negligible, we show that these designs divide the estimated effects into two orthogonal sub-spaces, separating sub-plot main effects and sub-plot by whole-plot interactions from the rest. Further we show how to construct split-plot...
